The Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV) is a catalog of Bach’s works compiled by Wolfgang Schmieder, the first edition of which was published in 1950 (200 years after Bach’s death), and is known as the “New Complete Works of Bach. The second edition was published in 1990, incorporating the results of reappraisals since the first edition, and was published in 1998.

The difference with Mozart’s Köchelverzeichnis is that they are not arranged in chronological order. In Bach’s catalog, works are numbered according to genre. Even within each genre, there is no regularity in the chronological order. Therefore, it is not possible to determine which piece belongs to which period from the numbers. Research on the chronology of Bach’s compositions has been carried over to the 20th century and beyond. Many more works have been added since the first edition; the Anhang (Anh) in BWV is a group of works that have been concluded to be forgeries since the first edition.
