The Earth Revolves Around Me
If you ask an American, “Where are you from?”, what do you think they’ll answer? They’ll probably say, “I’m from Los Angeles,” or “I’m from New York.” Some might even say, “I’m from Texas.” What does this mean? They mistakenly believe that everyone in the world knows the geography of America. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Japanese person who would answer “Tokyo” if asked where they’re from. A German would almost certainly not answer “Berlin.” However, 80% of Americans will answer with the city or state they’re from. This is because they believe the Earth revolves around them. What does this mean? If you find a white person and ask, “Where are you from?”, and they answer “From Georgia”, there are two possibilities. First, they could be Georgian, and second, they could be an American from Georgia.
