Corelli and Bach
Many of Corelli’s fugues are inspired and having full of impression, but unfortunately, they are all very short. In the Trio Sonata, for example, the theme is not fully developed and ends abruptly. Such disappointing compositions abound. On the other hand, the fugues in the second movements of the six violin sonatas are all truly full of magnificent works. For example, Bach composed a fugue for organ based on a theme by Corelli, in which Corelli’s theme is thoroughly and thoroughly developed in four voices. In the original Trio Sonata, this music ends rather abruptly, but in Bach’s hands it is transformed into a magnificent fugue. Bach also composed a fugue based on a theme by Legrenzi. In Bach’s arrangements of Vivaldi’s works, he simply transposed the pieces almost exactly onto keyboard instruments, but in Corelli’s arrangements, he seems to have completely borrowed them as if it’s his own “source of inspiration” and mastered them in his own way. #baroque #corelli #bach #片山俊幸
