Bach: Cantata No. 171 “Gott, wie dein Name, so ist auch dein Ruhm” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
The cantata begins with the choral fugue “Gott, wie dein Name, so ist auch dein Ruhm” with three trumpets, two oboes, and timpani. The second novement is a tenor aria, “Herr, so weit die Wolken gehn,” which begins like a trio sonata with two violins and bass continuo, and the tenor eventually joins in. It is a very enjoyable typical Bach piece. Following the alto recitative, the soprano aria “Jesus soll mein erstes Wort” has also a typical Bach melody with a gorgeous and brilliant violin obbligato. Helmut Wittek of the Tölzer Knabenchor sings very wonderfully. After the bass recitative, the cantata closes with the chorale “Laß uns das Jahr vollbringen. The chorale changes from four to three beats and then back to four beats again. After each paragraph of the chorale, three trumpets and timpani join in for a god blessing. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
