About Bach’s Courante
Bach’s Courante can be roughly divided into two types. One is the French-style Courante (Fig. 1), written in three-half time. The other is the Italian-style Courante (Fig. 2), written in three-quarter time. The French-style Courante is sometimes in compound time, with in six-quarter time. Let us look at examples of each Courante from Corelli, Handel, Couperin, and Rameau (Figure 3 and 4).
