Bach: Harpsichord Concertos / Masato Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan
Masato Suzuki’s recording of the harpsichord concerto in D minor, completely restored from a fragment of the harpsichord concerto BWV 1059, is very interesting. He reconstructed all three movements from cantata No. 35 “Geist und Seele wird verwirret” (Alto solo cantata). The first and third movements are restored from the first and fifth sinfonias of the cantata, respectively, and the second movement from the cantata da capo aria of the same cantata. This restoration is truly convincing. In particular, the second movement, siciliano, is a simple arrangement in which the alto solo part is simply replaced by an oboe solo, and yet it does not sound out of place at all. When this piece is usually performed as an oboe concerto, Alessandro Marcello’s concerto or the second movement of the harpsichord concerto in F minor is often used for the second movement, but this interpretation by Suzuki is much more suitable than them. #baroque #bach #片山俊幸
