Arcangelo Corelli / Sonatas for Violin, Op.5 / Accademia Bizantina and others
The fame of Arcangelo Corelli was not only in Italy but also in France and Germany. Op. 5 consists of six church sonatas for solo violin and basso continuo, five chamber sonatas, and La Folia. Because of its perfection, it was always regarded as a model among musicians of the time. The published score has been revised and reprinted several times, and among them, the slow movement of the first half of the church sonata has Corelli’s own notation of the ornaments. His pupils, such as Geminiani and Platti, also attempted to arrange these solo sonatas into concerto grossos for ensemble. There are many recordings of this collection, but the first record I ever bought was by Eduard Melkus in the analog era. The first six pieces faithfully reproduce Corelli’s ornaments in the slow movement, while the second six pieces have variations added by Melkus himself. Ryo Terakado has only recorded the latter half of the chamber sonatas on his CD. Is there any plan to record the first half? Among the many performance The performance by the Accademia Bizantina is the one I like the most and listen to often. The soloist, Stefano Montanari, gives us his own ornamentations here. Overall, I think this is a wonderful, well-rounded recording. There are also good performances by Andrew Manze, Musica Amphion, and Lina Tur Bonet. I would also like to add Benedek Csalog’s performance on traverso. #baroque #corelli #片山俊幸
