Caldara: Oratorio “Maddalena ai piedi di Christo” / Le Banquet Céleste, Damien Guillon
Antonio Caldara (1670 – 1736) studied instruments and composition with Legrenzi from his early childhood, when he sang in the choir of St. Mark’s Basilica. He is credited with having composed about 40 oratorios. The oratorio “Maddalena at the Feet of Christ” was composed in Venice shortly before 1700 and consists of a number of arias and duets sung in collaboration with strings and recitative. The characters are Mary Magdalene, the enigmatic woman associated with Jesus Christ, her elder sister Martha, Jesus Christ, the Pharisees, earthly love, and heavenly love. Mary Magdalene is considered by Catholics to be the same Mary who anointed Jesus in Bethania. #baroque #caldara #片山俊幸
