TV drama “The Wannsee Conference”
On January 20, 1942, a villa on the shores of Lake Wannsee in the suburbs of Berlin. A dozen government officials, SS officers, and others gather, and the story begins in the atmosphere of a “public hearing” for a public works project. The German TV film “The Wannsee Conference” produced in 2022, reconstructs the process of deciding Nazi Germany’s “Jewish policy” based on the actual proceedings of the time. The fact that the “proceedings” even existed seems unbelievable, but it allowed the Nazi war crimes to be judged at the later Nuremberg Trials. Toward the end of the conference, the participants discussed how to efficiently kill the estimated 11 million Jews in Europe.
