Bach: Cantata No. 175 “Er rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen” / Gustav Leonhardt

Cantata for Pentecost Tuesday with text by Christiana Mariana von Ziegler. The piece begins with the recitative “Er rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen” with three recorders, the shepherd’s instruments, and a tenor. This is followed by the alto aria “Komm, leite mich” accompanied by three recorders. The solemn atmosphere created by the parallel fourths of the recorders is impressive. Following the tenor recitative, the tenor aria “Es dünket mich, ich seh dich kommen” is sung with cello piccolo obbligato. The delightful piece of bourrée rhythm. The next recitative, bass responds to the alto, then turns to arioso, leading to the bass aria “Öffnet euch, ihr beiden Ohren”. 2 trumpets play ritornello, then the bass enters with the same theme.
