Bach: Cantata No. 129 “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott” / Gustav Leonhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 129 “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott” / Gustav Leonhardt
Chorale cantata based on the hymn “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott” by Johann Olearius. The first, “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott,” is a celebratory chorale fantasy with three trumpets and timpani, flauto traverso and two oboes. The second movement is the bass aria “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott, mein Heil”. The bass sings a gentle melody over a leaping bass. In the following soprano aria “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott, mein Trost” the flauto traverso and violin play a beautiful obbligato. I especially like the flute melody at the beginning. It gives me a rare opportunity to hear the flute of Frans Brüggen. Next is the alto aria “Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott, der ewig lebet” accompanied by oboe d’amore. All five stanzas of this cantata are choruses and arias, and there is no recitative, making it an anomalous work. The final chorale, “Dem wir das Heilig jetzt” again ends with a lively, festive orchestration. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
