Bach: Cantata No. 128 “Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein” / Gustav Leonhardt
Cantata for Ascension Day with text by Christiana Mariana von Ziegler. The first chorus, “Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein” is a choral fantasy with a choral melody by Nikolaus Decius. The instrumentation consists of two horns, two oboes, oboe da caccia, and string ensemble. Following the tenor recitative, the bass aria “Auf, auf, mit hellem Schall” begins with ritornello for trumpet and string orchestra. After the aria ends with interplay with the trumpet, the sudden modulation leads to a recitativo accompagnato. The piece ends with a return to the ritornello from the beginning. Next comes the aria “Sein Allmacht zu ergründen” for the alto and tenor duett with oboe d’amore obbligato.
