Bach: Cantata No. 191 “Gloria in excelsis Deo” / Masaaki Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan
A cantata with Latin text. In 1733, Bach dedicated a mass (later the “Kyrie” and “Gloria” of the Mass in B minor) to Elector Friedrich Augustus II of Saxony as purpose of his job search to court composer, and this cantata was the original song for the “Gloria” of it. The soprano and tenor aria “Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui sancto” in the second movement is the same as “Domine Deus” in the Mass in B minor, but it is only about half the length, so those who are used to hearing it will no doubt find it lacking. The third movement, “Sicut erat in principio” is based on the choral song “Cum Sancto Spiritu” from the Mass in B minor, but the orchestration has been significantly altered, beginning with the flute at the beginning. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0191.pdf
