The opening chorale, “Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ” begins with homophony, but develops counterpointwise after text “Ein starker Nothelfer du bist Im Leben und im Tod. The soprano’s chorale melody is overlaid with horns. The following alto aria “Ach, unaussprechlich ist die Not” is oboe d’amore obbligato. It is a typical of Bach piece with frequent modulations. Following the tenor recitative, the soprano, tenor, and bass sing the tercet aria “Ach, wir bekennen unsre Schuld” in counterpoint, interspersed with several ritornellos in the basso continuo.
