Bach: Cantata No. 143 “Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele” / Gustav Leronhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 143 “Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele” / Gustav Leronhardt
This cantata is composed of three corno dacaccia, timpani, bassoon, and strings, an arrangement rarely seen in Bach. It is a piece with few counterpoint elements, which is characteristic of Bach, and is suspected to be a forgery. The first chorus, “Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele” has a festive sound, and the three horns are effective. In the second piece, “Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ” the soprano sings the chorale melody, accompanied by the violin and basso continuo in the form of dispersed chords. Following the tenor recitative, the tenor aria “Tausendfaches Unglück, Schrecken” is sung with string accompaniment. The flowing melody of the first violin and the staccato of the bass are the hallmarks of this aria. The fifth movement aria “Der Herr ist König ewiglich” by the bass is a mediocre piece consisting almost exclusively of main and genitive chords. The sixth movement, tenor aria “Jesu, Retter deiner Herde” has a chorale melody overlaid to tenor by strings in octave unison. The final chorale, “Gedenk, Herr Jesu, an dein Amt” has a soprano cantus firmus overlaid with “Halleluja” by the other voices. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
