Bach: Cantata No. 107 “Was willst du dich betrüben” / Gustav Leonhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 107 “Was willst du dich betrüben” / Gustav Leonhardt

Chorale cantata with instrumentation of two flutes, two oboes d’amore, corno da caccia, strings and basso continuo. The original is a hymn by Johann Hermann. The opening chorale fantasy, “Was willst du dich betrüben” is a tragic piece that begins with a stifled ritornello. The second piece, a bass recitative, is an arioso-like piece with chorale lyrics, accompanied by two oboes d’amore. This is followed by the bass aria “Auf ihn magst du es wagen” a confident and powerful piece with string accompaniment, sung over a characteristic bass bass figure. The tenor aria “Wenn auch gleich aus der Höllen” is music accompanied by a bass passage with a clear intention. It is a sound pattern of Satan’s evil schemes, with ferocious movements and abrupt rests. The soprano aria “Er richts zu seinen Ehren” is sung by a wonderful boy soprano Marcus Klein of Tölzer Knabenchor’s with two oboes d’amore in obbligato. The tenor aria “Drum ich mich ihm ergebe” is a bright piece of aria with the unison of two flutes that Bach often used. The final chorale, “Herr, gib, daß ich dein Ehre” is sung with the accompaniment of the jumping gigue-style instruments. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0107.pdf
