Bach: Cantata No. 83 “Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

The piece opens with the alto aria “Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde” accompanied by two oboes, two horns, solo violin, and string ensemble. After a joyful ritornello, the alto sings a stretched “Erfreute” in coloratura. It is sung by the boy alto of the Wiener Sängerknaben, but as usual, the name of the performer is not written in the liner notes. The chorale “Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Friede fahren, wie du gesaget hast” is sung by the bass, accompanied by the strings in flowing unison. The piece returns to the chorale again at the end after a long recitative section in the middle. The third piece is the tenor aria “Eile, Herz, voll Freudigkeit” sung by the string ensemble and the joyful obbligato of the solo violin.
