Bach: Cantata No. 74 “Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten” / Gustav Leonhardt

The first movement is a choral piece, “Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten”. Three trumpets and timpani join the theme played by strings and oboes. The chorus is sung first by the soprano and alto, then by the tenor and bass, and finally by all four voices together. The first aria, “Komm, komm, mein Herze steht dir offen” is sung by the oboes da caccia and sopranos in a gentle melody. Following the alto recitative, the bass aria “Ich gehe hin und komme wieder zu euch” is sung over a persistently repeated basso ostintato. The following tenor aria “Kommt, eilet, stimmet Sait und Lieder” is sung in coloratura with a lively ritornello by strings. After the bass recitative accompagniato, the alto aria “Nichts kann mich erretten” is sung also in coloratura with ritornello by strings and oboes accompanied by the arpeggios by solo violin.
