Bach: Cantata No. 46 “Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgend ein Schmerz sei” / Gustav Leonhardt
Cantata with text by an unknown author based on the siege of Jerusalem. The first piece is the chorus “Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgend ein Schmerz sei,” which begins with a prelude of two recorders playing together, followed by a fugue in the second half. Later, Bach used the first half of this piece in the Mass in B minor (Qui tollis peccata mundi) with the instrument changed to flute. The second piece is a recitative accompagniato by tenors, with two recorders playing short passages over the sustained notes of the strings. The third piece is the bass aria “Dein Wetter zog sich auf von weiten” with an obbligato by the trumpet. The tremolo in the basso continuo and the trumpet passage represent a lightning bolt. The bass soloist has a high degree of difficulty in this piece, which requires coloratura. The bass soloist is Hans-Friedrich Kunz. Following the alto recitative, the alto aria “Doch Jesus will auch bei der Strafe” features two recorders and an oboe da caccia playing the basset in unison. The final chorale, “O großer Gott von Treu,” is written in the style often used by Bach, with the instruments joining the each line of chorale. #baroque #bach #片山俊幸
