Bach: Cantata No. 47 “Wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
The first chorus begins with a sighing passage and sequenz played by two oboes, and after a while the chorus begins to sing the fugue theme. As the fugue unfolds, the oboes and string ensemble continue to play the sighing passages. Toward the end of the piece, the chorus also begins to sing the sighing passages, and the instruments begin to play the fugue theme. It is a moving and very elaborate piece. The soprano aria “Wer ein wahrer Christ will heißen” is an obbligato for violin. The solo by Peter Jelosits of the Wiener Sangerknaben is very good. Following the bass recitative, the bass aria “Jesu, beuge doch mein Herze” is a typical Bach aria in the style of a trio sonata for oboe and violin plus bass vocal.
