The piece opens with the soprano aria “Gottlob! nun geht das Jahr zu Ende”. The instrumentation consists of a string ensemble, two oboes, taille, and basso continuo. The accompaniment moves in separate wind and string sections, with the soprano singing the same motive. In the chorale “Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren” (Alla breve), the alto, tenor, and bass develop the motive counterpointually, while the soprano sings a cantus firmus. Each voice part is overlaid by strings and winds (cornet, oboe, taille, and trombone) appropriate to its register, in the manner of a motet. The bass recitative follows, but as early as the third beat of the first measure, it turns into an arioso. Following the tenor’s recitative accompagnato, the alto and tenor duet aria “Gott hat uns im heurigen Jahre gesegnet” is sung with only bass accompaniment.
