Bach: Cantata No. 27 “Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende?” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Bach: Cantata No. 27 “Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende?” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

The piece begins with the chorus “Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende? (Who knows how close my end is?)”. After the two oboes and the string ensemble introduction played on the orgelpunkt, the chorale is sung, but between each line of the chorale, free melodic solos are inserted by sopranos, altos, and tenors. The theme of “Death” dominates the piece with a heavy atmosphere. The chorale melody is overlaid by the corno. The tenor recitative is followed by the alto aria “Willkommen! will ich sagen”. The oboe da caccia and organ play a rather long ritornello, followed by a solo. The melody is bright and joyful. However, the theme is still “death”. The soprano recitative accompaniment is followed by the bass aria “Gute Nacht, du Weltgetümmel” accompanied by the string ensemble. The opening melody and the cessation of movement in the second bar remind me of “Ach, mein Sinn” from the John Passion. The cantata ends with the chorale “Welt, ade!”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0027.pdf
