Bach: Cantata No. 202 “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten” / Masaaki Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan

A cantata for weddings, filled with some of Bach’s most charming arias. The aria “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten” begins with an oboe solo, creating a euphoric atmosphere, but then quickly changes to a minor key. The piece moves between major and minor keys, eventually turning into a light andante, before returning to the happy atmosphere at the beginning. Following a short recitative, the aria “Phoebus eilt mit schnellen Pferden” is sung over a fast 12/8 basso continuo, representing the cantering steps of Phoebus’ (Apollo’s) horse. It is a truly refreshing aria. The next recitative and arioso introduce Cupid, the god of love. The aria “Wenn die Frühlingslüfte streichen” is then sung with violin obbligato. The soprano takes over the impressive ritornello melody, and the piece alternates frequently between forte and piano. The recitative and arioso are followed by the aria “Sich üben im Lieben (Practicing love)”, with lively obbligato oboe and arpeggios in the basso continuo. The final recitative sings “the bond of chaste love” and is followed by a sudden, thunderous descent in the basso continuo. This is followed by the gavotte-rhythmic aria “Sehet in Zufriedenheit”, which concludes this happy cantata. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0202.pdf
