Bach: Cantata No. 172 “Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget, ihr Saiten!” / Gustav Leonhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 172 “Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget, ihr Saiten!” / Gustav Leonhardt
Cantata from the Weimar period, text by Franck. Instrumentation includes three trumpets, timpani, oboe, bassoon, and with a second viola in the string ensemble. The opening piece, “Erschallet, ihr Lieder” is a celebratory choral piece written in homophony, with a middle section written in polyphony. Then da capo to the beginning. The bass recitative, which sings the words of Jesus from the Bible, ends with a long melismatic arioso. The bass aria “Heiligste Dreieinigkeit” follows, accompanied by three trumpets and timpani. Both instruments and soloist praise God by playing fanfares in high pitch. The next aria, “O Seelenparadies” is a tenor aria sung in obbligato with flowing string unison. In the soprano and alto duet aria “Komm, laß mich nicht länger warten”, the right hand of the organ adds the decorated melody of the hymn “Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott”. The soprano sings the character “Seele” (soul), and the alto sings the character “Heiliger Geist” (Holy Spirit). The cantata ends with Nicolai’s chorale “Von Gott kömmt mir ein Freudenschein”. Leonhardt omits the repeat of the opening chorus as specified in the score. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0172.pdf
