Bach: Cantata No. 89 “Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim” / Gustav Leronhardt
The bass aria “Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim” is a tragic and heavy piece with many sigh motifs for strings, two oboes and horns. Following the alto recitative, the alto aria “Ein unbarmherziges Gerichte” is sung in a characteristic basso ostentato with frequent modulations. The soprano recitative is followed by the soprano aria “Gerechter Gott, ach, rechnest du,” whose bright oboe melody may remind one of the 13th soprano aria from the John Passion.
