Bach: Cantata No. 48 “Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
The opening chorus, “Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen,” begins with a tragic chorus over a sighing tone pattern played relentlessly by the string orchestra. The sad melody of the chorale is then overlaid by the trumpet and oboe III, with a time lag between the two. Following the alto recitative, the chorale “Solls ja so sein” is sung simply, and then the alto aria “Ach, lege das Sodom der sündlichen Glieder” is sung with oboe obbligato. The tenor recitative is followed by the tenor aria “Vergibt mir Jesus meine Sünden” is sung in unison by the string ensemble and oboes. The aria has a dance-like rhythm accompanied by a three-beat hemiola from beginning to end. The piece concludes with the chorale “Herr Jesu Christ, einiger Trost”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
