Bach: Cantata No. 208 “Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd” / Rudolf Lutz, J.S. Bach Foundation Orchestra
A secular cantata from the Weimar period known as the “Jagdkantate” (hunting cantata). Based on a libretto by Salomon Franck. Commissioned by Wilhelm Ernst, Duke of Weimar, it was composed as a dedication for the birthday of Christian, Duke of Weissenfels. The cantata is a simple one, in which the mythological gods praise Duke Christian, but the music is wonderful. The horn, a hunting instrument, is used to great effect throughout. The recorder is also used in the arias with a pastoral atmosphere. In this recording music begins with the trio which is considered an addendum. But it is clearly a part of this cantata. Because the theme of this trio is the bass melody of the thirteenth movement aria “Weil die wollenreichen Herden”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
