Purcell: Fantasia / Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wien
Those pieces, written in the style of an era before Purcell’s time, has a profound atmosphere, as if one were walking through a deep forest. His Fantasias for viols are works that are the opposite of the “classical” string quartets. They are rather a homage to English Renaissance composers such as William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, and John Dowland. It will be interesting to listen to and compare performances by Jordi Savall’s Hesperion XXI and more recent recordings by Chelys Consort of Viols, Phantasm, Musica Amphion and others. #baroque #purcell #片山俊幸
