Bach: Concertos for Two Harpsichords / Masato Suzuki, Masaaki Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan
It is a sharp performance that draws you in from the very first piece. Bach’s concertos for two harpsichords are all highly accomplished works, but the C major piece is especially wonderful. The tension building up to the final fugue is irresistible. In this CD, an orchestral suite in the same key is performed in succession, arranged by Masato Suzuki. The two harpsichords express all the qualities of the original piece. If Bach were alive, he would have praised the tempo and ornaments of the overture. The rhythmic sense (Inégalité) of the dances and other aspects of the performance are heartbreakingly sophisticated. The strings are also compact and ideally balanced with a minimum number of backing players. #baroque #bach #片山俊幸
