Bach: Cantata No. 170 “Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlus” / Gustav Leonhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 170 “Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlus” / Gustav Leonhardt
One of Bach’s four solo cantatas for alto. The first aria “Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlus” is sung in flowing ritornello in twelve-eighths time. The instrumentation consists of strings and an oboe d’amore. The oboe d’amore’s unison with the first violin in the lower register creates a soft sound and a heavenly, peaceful atmosphere. After the recitative comes the aria “Wie jammern mich doch die verkehrten Herzen” sung with organ obbligato. This is an impressive piece with many modulations in apojatura and chromatic scale. It is sung not in basso continuo, but in a stifled basset in unison by the violin and viola. Following the recitative accompagnato is the aria “Mir ekelt mehr zu leben” from the last movement. It is sung with organ, oboe d’amore, and string ensemble accompaniment. The ritornello begins suddenly with a leap in the augment fourth degree, and the soloist follows it. The organ plays an active role in this piece. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0170.pdf
