About Bach’s Gigue
Gigue dances, which end a suite, are often written in fugue (Fig. 1), and can be divided into two types: Italian-style gigue in 12/8 or 9/8 time (Figs. 2 and 3) and French-style gigue in 3/8 or 6/8 time (Figs. 4, 5, and 6). French-style gigue often uses dotted notes. Some gigue have both characteristics, and it is difficult to distinguish one from the other. In concertos, this rhythm is favored in the last movement (Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major and No. 6 in B flat major). #baroque #bach #gigue #片山俊幸
