Bach: Cantata No. 14 “Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit” / Gustav Leonhardt
The first movement is the chorale fantasy “Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit” based on Martin Luther’s hymn, and has a complex structure unique to Bach in which the theme is developed in a fugue manner while the corno da caccia and two oboes overlay a chorale melody in unison. The second movement is the bright soprano aria “Unsre Stärke heißt zu schwach”, which played with obbligato by Corno da Caccia and string ensemble. Following the tenor recitative, the fourth movement bass aria “Gott, bei deinem starken Schützen” is impressive with its obbligato intertwined with the two oboes.
