“Fantasies, Ayres and Dances” / The Julian Bream Consort
The record features music written for the so-called “Broken Consort” in the Elizabethan era, consisting of lute, cittern, pandora, treble viol, bass viol, and flauto traverso, as well as consort songs and fantasias by Thomas Morley, John Dowland, William Byrd, and others. I think it is one of the best records I’ve ever heard, even now; it was recorded in 1988, which means it was 12 years after David Munrow’s death, and some of the members overlap with Munrow’s “Early Music Consort of London”. It is one of the records that should not be forgotten when talking about early music. #baroque #renaissance #片山俊幸
