Bach: Cantata No. 76 “Die Hinmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Bach: Cantata No. 76 “Die Hinmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Cantata for the Second Sunday after Trinity. The first performance was held on June 6, 1723 at the Thomas Church in Leipzig. The first movement chorus, “Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes,” has the soloist and chorus (tutti) taking turns. Following the tenor recitative (Accompagnato) and an arioso in the middle, the lovely soprano aria “Hört, ihr Völker, Gottes Stimme” with violin obbligato is sung by Wilhelm Wiedl of the Tölzer Knabenchor. The next bass recitative is followed by the bass aria “Fahr hin, abgöttische Zunft!” After the alto recitative, the first half is concluded with Martin Luther’s chorale “Es woll uns Gott genädig sein”.
The second part opens with a trio entitled “Sinfonia” with oboe d’amore, viola da gamba, and bass (the same as the first movement of the organ trio in BWV 528). After the bass recitative, the tenor aria “Hasse nur, hasse mich recht” is sung over a bass continuo with a sharp modulation. The alto recitative is followed by the alto aria “Liebt, ihr Christen, in der Tat!”. The oboe d’amore and viola da gamba perform a mournful obbligato. After the tenor recitative, the entire work concludes with Luther’s chorale “Es danke, Gott, und lobe dich”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
