Bach: Cantata No. 92 “Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn” / Gustav Leonhardt
Choral cantata based on a hymn by Paul Gerhard, premiered in Leipzig on January 28, 1725. The first chorus, “Ich habe in Gottes Herz und Sinn” features two oboes d’amore, strings, and basso continuo. The soprano cantus firmus is accompanied by the other voices in a counter-melody that imitates the instrumental parts. The following bass recitative is a “one-person narrative” in which the lyrics of the chorale passage “Es kann mir fehlen nimmermehr!” is devided and interjected. The basso continuo is more like an arioso than a recitative. The tenor aria “Seht, seht! wie reißt, wie bricht, wie fällt” is sung throughout with the intense accompaniment of the string orchestra. The chorale “Zudem ist Weisheit und Verstand” is sung by alto with gentle obbligato of two oboes d’amore. The form is a da capo aria. The tenor recitative is followed by the bass aria “Das Brausen von den rauhen Winden,” which is sung only by basso continuo. In this piece, the bass and the bass continuo move on equal footing throughout. In the next chorale, “Ei nun, mein Gott, so fall ich dir,” the bass, tenor, alto, and soprano, in that order, intervene between the chorale lines with a recitative. The soprano aria “Meinem Hirten bleib ich treu” is sung with the charming accompaniment of oboe d’amore and string pizzicato.
