Bach: Cantata No. 33 “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ” / Gustav Leonhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 33 “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ” / Gustav Leonhardt
This cantata was premiered in Leipzig on the 13th Sunday after Trinity in 1724. The opening chorale fantasy “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ”, based on a hymn by Konrad Hubert, features the chorale melody sung homophonically in three time signatures. Two oboes join the string ensemble independently. The fallowing bass recitative becomes an arioso at the end of the piece and is succeeded by the alto aria “Wie furchtsam wankten meine Schritte”. The accompaniment is a string ensemble, with Violin I and II in arco, the others in pizzicato. The performance time of this aria is about 8 minutes long and soloist is René Jacobs. Following the tenor recitative, the tenor and bass sing the duet aria “Gott, der du die Liebe heißt” in two oboes obbligato. The tenor and bass move in parallel or counterpoint. The cantata ends with the chorale “Ehr sei Gott in dem höchsten Thron”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
