Handel: 9 German arias / Emma Kirkby, London Baroque

One of the few Handel works in German, with lyrics by German scriptwriter Barthold Heinrich Brockes. Handel composed the “Brockes Passion” from his libretto. Other composers such as Telemann and Mattheson wrote Passions according to the same text. The nine German arias are a collection full of melodies typical of Handel, and Emma Kirkby’s performance is excellent. These are the da capo arias form with instrumental accompaniment, with London Baroque playing obbligato and basso continuo. And a thoughtful inclusion of Handel’s Violin Sonata in the middle, perhaps because the LP recordings have a little extra recording time. #baroque #handel #kirkby #片山俊幸
