Jan Dismas Zelenka:Trio Sonata / Ensemble Zefiro / Paul Dombrecht,Marcel Ponseele
The long fugue movements, written in two-part form, are overwhelming. For example, the second movement of the trio in G minor has 60 bars in the first half alone. The theme alone is 10 bars long. After a breathless development, the first half ends in D minor. In the second half, a new short theme is presented from D minor to G minor and back again in D minor. Then, when the development has come to an end, the long theme of the first half unexpectedly (and most likely expected) returns to form a double fugue. In the end, the length of the second movement is a whopping 138 bars! It is a terrifyingly large piece. I was very surprised that there are a total of six trio sonatas in this style. It seems that Heinz Holliger, an oboe player, found the scores of this pieces somewhere. I was reminded that there were great composers in Bohemia who were comparable to Sebastian Bach. I think it is a treasure of repertoire for all oboe players in the world. #baroque #zelenka #片山俊幸
