Bach: Cantata No. 156 “Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
The piece begins with a sinfonia for oboe and string ensemble. Although this piece is known as the adagio of the harpsichord concerto in F minor, the strings are bowed rather than pizzicato, and there is no ornamentation. This is followed by the soprano and tenor duet “Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe” (I am standing with one foot in the grave). It’s accompanied by strings in unison, the soprano sings the melody of Johann Hermann Schein’s chorale. Following the bass recitative, the alto aria “Herr, was du willt, soll mir gefallen” (Lord, what you shall want please me) is sung by the oboe and violin in obbligato.
