Bach: Cantata No. 137 “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

A chorale cantata based on a hymn by Joachim Neander. The opening chorale fantasy “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren” is a typical festive cantata orchestration with three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, strings and basso continuo. The motive presented at the beginning becomes the theme of a choral fugue, and the soprano follows with a chorale melody at the end, making this a moving piece. The first aria is “Lobe den Herren, der alles so herrlich regieret” by the alto. The alto sings the chorale melody to a solo violin obbligato. It is the same tune as the last piece of the Schübler Chorale, “Kommst du nun, Jesu, vom Himmel herunter” (BVW 650). This is followed by the soprano and bass double aria “Lobe den Herren, der künstlich und fein dich bereitet” with two oboes playing obbligato. The chorale motive appears only in fragments, but is treated in canonical style. The tenor aria “Lobe den Herren, der deinen Stand sichtbar gesegnet” is sung in a frenetic bass passage. The trumpet layers the chorale melody without any ornamentation. Interestingly, although the piece itself is in a minor key, the chorale melody remains original and blends perfectly into the harmony. The chorale ends with “Lobe den Herren, was in mir ist, lobe den Namen”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0137.pdf
