Bach: Cantata No. 94 “Was frag ich nach der Welt” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Chorale cantatas based on chorales by Balthasar Kindermann. The first piece is chorale “Was frag ich nach der Welt” with string orchestra and flauto traverso solo accompaniment. The flute is by Leopold Stastny. Next is the bass coloratura aria “Die Welt ist wie ein Rauch und Schatten”, accompanied by basso continuo. The soloist is Philippe Huttenlocher. The third piece is the tenor chorale “Die Welt sucht Ehr und Ruhm” which is interrupted some didactic lyrics recitatives. This is followed by the alto aria “Betörte Welt, betörte Welt” with a Undulating melodic obbligato by flauto traverso, about “Infatuated world”. The fifth piece is the bass chorale “Die Welt bekümmert sich” again with a didactic lyrics recitatives. The next aria by tenor “Die Welt kann ihre Lust und Freud” is a light piece in a gigue rythm by the string ensemble accompaniment.
