Bach: Cantata No. 37 “Wer da gläubet und getauft wird” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Cantata for the Ascension of Christ, premiered in Leipzig on May 18, 1724. Compared to the 11th cantata “Lobet Gott In Seinen Reichen” also written for the Ascension, this cantata is less festive because it does not use trumpet and timpani. The opening chorus, “Wer da gläubet und getauft wird” is for strings with two oboes d’amore and basso continuo. The piece is counterpoint-like but with little imitation, and the instrumental section and chorus develop in a similar manner. The tenor aria “Der Glaube ist das Pfand der Liebe” is thought to be missing the obbligato part, and various attempts have been made to restore it based on the tenor melody. Harnoncourt gives the role to the violin soloist. The chorale begins with a basso continuo introduction, followed by the soprano singing the melody of Philipp Nicolai’s hymn “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern” which is chased by the alto. The bass recitative accompagnato is followed by the bass aria “Der Glaube schafft der Seele Flügel” sung by the oboe d’amore in unison with the string orchestra. The cantata closes with the chorale “Den Glauben mir verleihe”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0037.pdf
