Bach: Cantata No. 149 “Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg” / Gustav Leonhardt
Cantata for the Feast of St. Michael. The music is festively orchestrated, including three trumpets and timpani, three oboes and bassoon. The cantata opens with the full orchestra and chorus “Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg”. The bass aria “Kraft und Stärke sei gesungen” is sung on a bassoon basso continuo which overlayed with a violone on the ritornello. The powerful solo by Max van Egmond. Following the alto recitative, the soprano aria “Gottes Engel weichen nie” is accompanied by a string ensemble. Sebastian Henigg’s plaintive singing can be heard. The piece continues with a tenor recitative, followed by the duet aria “Seid wachsam, ihr heiligen Wächter” by alto and tenor canon, sung with a joyful obbligato of the bassoon. The chorale “Ach Herr, lass dein lieb Engelein” is played as the finale in full orchestra. Very strangely the trunpets ware used only on the cadence. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
