Bach: Cantata No. 35 “Geist und Seele wird verwirret” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Bach: Cantata No. 35 “Geist und Seele wird verwirret” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
This is a solo cantata for alto. It is as close to an “organ concerto” as possible, and not only is there no chorale movement, but no chorale melody is used. The opening Sinfonia of the first part and the Sinfonia at the beginning of the second part are presumably adapted from the lost concerto. The aria “Geist und Seele wird verwirret” in the second movement is a Siciliano with the same instrumentation as the sinfonia. The recitative is followed by the aria “Gott hat alles wohlgemacht” in the third movement, is sunged with the organ obbligato, and the first half ends. The second half begins with a sinfonia. Following the recitative, the piece concludes with the aria “Ich wünsche nur bei Gott zu leben”. The instrumentation is the same as in the Sinfonia, and the right hand of the organ plays an active role here as well. The soloist is Paul Esswood. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
