Porpora: Violin Sonatas / Giovanni Guglielmo, Anton Steck
Nicola Porpora, famous as an opera composer and for training singers such as Farinelli, left twelve violin sonatas. Published in Vienna in 1754, the fact that this collection was modeled after Corelli’s half-century earlier is evident in the fact that the first six sonatas are in the form of “sonata da chiesa (church sonatas)” and the latter six are “sonata da camera (chamber sonatas)”. In the church sonata, the second movement is an exertional fugue with heavy notes, again following Corelli’s style. Guglielmo, who is known for his recording of Tartini’s complete concerto cycle, plays with a clean, bright sound. Cellist Pietro Bosna also plays a very expressive bass. The other performance by Anton Steck on violin reminds me of Eduard Melkus, whom I used to listen to a lot in the past. #baroque #porpora #片山俊幸
