Bach: Cantata No. 58 “Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Bach: Cantata No. 58 “Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Like Cantata No. 57, it consists of a dialogue between Jesus (bass) and the soul (soprano). The soprano solo is sung by Peter Jelosits of the “Wiener Sangerknaben”. The bass is Ruud van der Meer. The first piece is a duett aria “Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid” accompanied by the string orchestra and the two oboes which play in unison with the first and second violins. The soprano sings the chorale melody. Following the bass recitative, the soprano sings the third aria “Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Leiden” with the violin obbligato.
In this aria, the soprano soloist Peter Jelosits is replaced with Seppi Kronwitter of the “Tölzer Knabenchor”. Following the soprano recitative and arioso, the duett aria “Ich hab für mir ein schwere Reis” is accompanied by two violins and oboe in unison. For some reason, the soprano who sings the chorale melody here has been returned to Peter Jelosits. Since there is no reason for changing the soprano singer, it is probably due to the boys’ physical condition or private reasons.
As you can see, boy sopranos are very sensitive. Bach must also have used different members of the “Thomanerchor” in this way. If the recording had been made by a female soprano, it would not be allowed. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸
