Suites for Unaccompanied Cello (on Violoncello da spalla) / Ryo Terakado
I think it was Sigiswald Kuijken who introduced the Violoncello da spalla to the world. It is a small cello that is played by holding it like a violin. It can be played with the bowing technique of a violin, so it seems to be favored by violinists. Sergey Malov’s performance is uploaded to the YouTube video of the Netherlands Bach Society. Actually, Bach’s Suite No. 6 has a lot of high notes, which is difficult to play on a regular cello. On the other hand, it is relatively easy to play this piece on the five-string Violoncello da spalla. On the CD by Ryo Terakado, it is played very naturally like a violin. The tone is a little bit nasal and muffled, probably due to the thickness and tension of the strings, but it is rather good. #baroque #bach #片山俊幸
