Bach: Cantata No. 40 “Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes” / Gustav Leonhardt

Bach: Cantata No. 40 “Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes” / Gustav Leonhardt

Christmas cantata. The opening chorus, “Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes” begins with the sound of two hunting horns. The instrumentation consists of two other oboes, strings, and basso continuo. Following the ritornello of the instrumental section, the chorus enters homophonically. This is followed by a fugue, which ends homophonically. Although there are no trumpets and timpani in this piece, it has a festive atmosphere. The tenor recitative is followed by the first chorale “Die Sünd macht Leid”. The bass aria “Höllische Schlange, wird dir nicht bange?” is accompanied by a string ensemble and two oboes. The music is intense and undulating, like an opera aria. After the alto recitative was sung with strings, the second chorale “Schüttle deinen Kopf und sprich” followed. The tenor aria “Christenkinder, freuet euch!” followed, sung in obbligato with two oboes and two horns. The aria includes a tenor coloratura. The cantata ends with the chorale “Jesu, nimm dich deiner Glieder”. #baroque #bach #cantata #片山俊幸 https://excelkobo.net/bachwerke/archive/BWV0040.pdf
