John Dowland: Lute Songs / Alfred Deller

John Dowland: Lute Songs / Alfred Deller
There was a time in my young life when I was fascinated by Dowland’s music. The first time I heard it was performed by Alfred Deller. I was particularly absorbed in that melancholy world of music. As for Dowland’s actual personality, there seems to be a division between those who say he was melancholy and those who say he was jovial. I remember clearly hearing “Flow, My Tears”, “Can She Excuse My Wrong?”, “Sorrow, Stay”, “I Saw My Lady Weep” and “Come, Heavy Sleep” how beautifully these melodies touched my heart those days. Later, Anthony Rooley’s The Consort of Musicke and others began making recordings of Dowland’s works one after another. The recordings by Rooley and Emma Kirkby in particular are a just historic achievement. Other records by David Munroe’s The Early Music Consort of London and Julian Bream Consort are also hard to discard. #baroque #dowland #片山俊幸
