Bach: Cantata No. 5 “Wo soll ich fliehen hin” / Nikolaus Harnoncourt
The piece begins with the chorale fantasy “Wo soll ich fliehen hin” in which the soprano sings the chorale melody. The soprano part is augmented by a slide trumpet (tromba da tirarsi). The remaining voices sing free melodies in a counterpoint overlaid the instruments melodies. The lyrics of the entire piece are based on the hymn “Wo soll ich fliehen hin” by Johann Heermann. The bass recitative is followed by the tenor aria “Ergieße dich reichlich, du göttliche Quelle”. The viola obbligato representing a flowing spring. In the next recitative by the alto, is overlaid the chorale melody by the oboe, followed by the bass aria “Verstumme, Höllenheer” with strings, two oboes, and the usual trumpet obbligato.
